Marantz Model 10B Black - Details

Marantz 10B with custom made black face

The rumor that there has been a black so called “Broadcast Version”
of Model 10B with rack handles has been widely spread by a picture
of an eBay sale published on
classic-audio.com

It is most likely that this unit’s face was custom made
like the
black Model 120 also published on this site
with black knobs and golden lettering.
Marantz has never produced any unit with black knobs
and golden lettering in this production period!

Nowadays there are lots of eBay sales with black faced
units and rack versions of the early production period.
You can bet that most of these faces are custom made.
Sometimes there are really creative versions offered like
this one with silver face and black handles:

Before you buy such a Model 10B you should be aware of the fact that this will
never be a valuable collectors item unless you also have the original face plate!

Of course these units are mostly in “Mint Condition”
which is no miracle because the face is new!

Other sales seem to be obviously fraudulent like this one:

Apart from the fact that this seller has a very creative English
he also suffers from a lack of good behavior.
I asked him for detailed pictures of the back of the face.
The picture he sent me clearly revealed that it was a fake
which I told him. His answer was the final evidence: “FFFFUUUU!”

Picture shows rear view of custom made rack faces and original face.

There has in fact been a very rare rack version of Model 10B.
A solid face made of steel and the connection scews on the rear surface
(like shown on the picture of the rear surface of the normal Model 10B)
are an indication that the face is original and no aftermarket reproduction.
The two rack faces pictured above are definitely not original from Marantz!
